80/9 An Emblem of Nature
For 2020 Moorcroft’s designers celebrate a number of the RSPB’s success stories as the charity continues its vision to give nature a home. RSPB reserves only cover 0.6% of the UK’s land surface but they support more than 10% of the UK’s breeding population of 32 bird species and a selection of these are highlighted in this new collection of designs, together with other threatened species.
Extinct in the UK for at least 100 years, avocets returned to our shores to breed in 1947. Since then, the conservation work of the RSPB has been crucial to the success of these distinctive birds, and around 50% of the UK’s avocet’s now breed on RSPB reserves. The RSPB’s iconic avocet logo was designed by artist Robert Gillmor in 1955, and first used on a tie before being adopted as the charity’s official logo in 1970. 50 years on in 2020, designer Vicky Lovatt has chosen to feature a pair of these extraordinary birds, together with their young, on a classic Moorcroft vase to celebrate the occasion.
