This prestigious vase symbolically shows Koi carp overcoming adversity. Legend has it that a huge school of golden Koi gained strength swimming against a strong current in the Yellow River. When they reached a waterfall, a few tried to leap over the top of it until one, a black Koi, succeeded. In the foreground, is a Koi carp just about to leap, changing from gold to black. Those who gave up the battle to go up river, turned from gold to blue and can be seen amongst the swirls of the waterfall. The neck of the vase reveals a red setting sun behind a snow-capped mountain, with branches of blossom.
